Let me start off by declaring that every single holiday in Vietnam hold its own unique position in my heart. However, Tet is always my most favourite. Tet, or known by the name Lunar New Year in other parts of the world, is the most anticipated occasion for Vietnamese people. This tradition has lasted for thousands of years and is embedded in the minds of generations. This joyous time usually occurs in accordance to the Lunar calendar, and usually stretches from 6 to 7 days. There is a variety of activities that people partake in during Tet. However in my opinion, the most significant one involves those who live and work far away all coming back to their hometowns to celebrate the occasion with their loved ones. Tet is probably the only time that all members in a family can reunite and be with one another. When Tet is slowly approaching, the streets are often very crowded, flooded with vehicles. There are many traffic jams but it is understandable, as people often go out to buy ornaments to decorate their houses. However, there is one custom that I will always, always do every single new year, especially during the first day of New Year, which is ask for calligraphy to wish for strength, happiness, luck and fortune for new year. So as you can see, Tet is a fundamental importance to Vietnamese citizens and of course myself. It is a perfect time to reflect on the past, and create resolutions for the up-coming year.
